The City University of New York (CUNY) and NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) just launched the “Welcome to CUNY” campaign, bringing a personal invitation to NYC high school seniors to consider CUNY as their next step. With waived application fees and letters in multiple languages, this campaign aims to clear financial hurdles and spotlight CUNY as a high-quality, accessible college option right in the heart of New York City.
A United Front for NYC’s Future
CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and NYC Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos joined forces to make higher education affordable and within reach for NYC’s graduating seniors. Eligible students have until November 15 to take advantage of the application fee waiver, a small but impactful step toward broadening college access. With over 80% of CUNY’s incoming class last year hailing from NYC’s public high schools—especially Brooklyn Tech with nearly 400 CUNY students—this effort strengthens the deep ties between NYC’s schools and its public university system.
“Waiving fees and sending personalized letters is our way of saying, ‘We want you here,’” said Matos Rodríguez. “Together with NYC Public Schools, we’re committed to breaking down barriers so all students have a shot at an excellent college education close to home.”
Streamlined Paths to College Success
Each senior receives a personalized letter, complete with a QR code for quick access to CUNY’s admissions resources, financial aid options, and even virtual enrollment counselors. NYCPS seniors in the class of 2025 are guaranteed admission to CUNY’s community colleges, giving them a fresh start on an affordable degree. With top reasons to choose CUNY front and center—including diversity, affordability, and academic excellence—the campaign highlights CUNY’s unique advantages and aligns with Gov. Kathy Hochul’s College Application Month to make applying to college more accessible than ever.
Preparing Students for College and Beyond
The Adams Administration is also supporting this effort through NYCPS and CUNY’s shared college and career readiness programs, like College Now, which offers early college credit, and FutureReadyNYC, providing nearly 15,000 students with career-oriented classes. To help students shape their futures, NYCPS college and career coaches are on standby, assisting grads with everything from navigating college enrollment to finding direct employment pathways.
“Every student deserves a pathway to a bright future, and NYC’s public schools are here to make sure they see it,” said Aviles-Ramos. “Our partnership with CUNY is key in breaking down historical barriers, empowering our students to take their next steps.”
Nationally Recognized Impact
In a nod to its forward-thinking approach, CUNY recently earned the Higher Education Innovation Award in Washington, D.C., for its CUNY FAST program, which equips college students to guide NYC high schoolers through financial aid applications and provides in-person support across city schools and libraries.
A Proud Legacy of Access
CUNY has been central to New York’s educational landscape, with 233,000 students taking steps toward a brighter future. Over 80% of CUNY graduates stay local, contributing to NYC’s economy, culture, and civic life. With a legacy of inclusivity and access, CUNY remains dedicated to helping all New Yorkers succeed.
